History of Mottram in Longdendale, Manchester:

According to the history, Mottram in Longdendale was a part of Cheshire lying in the valley of Longdendale on the border with Derbyshire and close to the Peak District neighbouring Broadbottom and Hattersley. It was incorporated into Longdendale in 1936 and by 1991 the town was named Mottram in Longdendale.

Mottram became prominent for its transportation facilities having horse routes. From Cheshire, salt and lime was being carried for the improvement in soil till South Yorkshire over the Pennines via route named Manchester Sheffield stagecoach to the City Centre.

Prior to the existence of the Revolution of Industries, Mottram and Ashton were the significant towns. Since Mottram was small in significance and size, it was eclipsed by other towns.

In the early phases of industrialisation, the parish of Mottram was active and its cotton spinning mills were well significant in Wedneshough Green and the Treacle Street of Mottram. Along with dyeing, works like printing also got its own significance near Etherow at Broadbottom.

It was Luddites who secretly drilled on Wedneshough Green when 1812 Luddite Riots were held, resulting in the labour-reducing machines. These were smashed followed by the downfall of the industrialisation, which led to social conflict and hunger.

Stalybridge factories were closed by the local Charists during Plug Riots in 1842. By the time, it was 1860 Mottram experienced the increase in population. The railway line, constructed in1844, halted at Broadbottom and Hattersley except Mottram.

The Mottram in Longdendale has a tunnel named after its name itself as Mottram Tunnel. Drinking water is being carried all the way on gravity from Arnfield Reservoir, Derbyshire, Tintwistle in the River Etherow till Godley, Greater Manchester in the River Tame. The Godley Service Reservoir was constructed along with the tunnel in 1848 to filter the received water. It was completed by the end of 1851.

Mottram Tunnel has received a major mention in Manchester’s Water: The Reservoirs in the Hills under Tempus Publishing because of its length which was 2800 meters long, 95 centimetres per kilometre, 1.8 kilometres in diameter carrying 230 ml on daily basis.
